What to Wear
What to wear to your Taipei Photoshoot | Christmas Edition
WELCOME! Pleased to meet you, I’m Cass Davies, family & newborn baby photographer in Taipei. My family & I are from the UK, in beautiful North Wales. One of the main questions I get asked for help with by clients is – What to wear?! With Christmas Mini Photoshoots just around the corner I thought I would pop together a little overview of how to put together outfits for your family photoshoot, this article will concentrate on Christmas but the same theories apply across the year to look ‘put together’ & chic without being matchy matchy.
As an experienced international English speaking photographer since 2012, I know just what to wear so your portraits look great!
Do we all have to match? Should we all wear jeans & a white shirt? In short, no not at all. The best thing you can be for your family photoshoot, is a comfortable polished version of yourself, it is definitely not required to match although this can be cute for small children. Here are some key points for putting together a set of outfits for your family photographs in Taipei.
- CHOOSE A COLOUR PALETTE OF 3/4 COLOURS
- CHOOSE DIFFERENT COLOUR TONES FROM YOUR PALETTE & MIX THEM UP IN YOUR OUTFITS
- MAXIMUM OF ONE PATTERN OR POP COLOUR
- AVOID LOGOS
- CHOOSE SIMPLE WELL FITTING OUTFITS YOU CAN MOVE EASILY IN, YOU’LL LIKELY BE SITTING FOR SOME OR ALL OF YOUR PHOTOS
- FOR CHILDREN FITTED SKIRTS ARE HARD TO CROSS LEGS IN MODESTLY, TIGHTS CAN HELP BUT A LOOSER SKIRT AND BARE FEET IS IDEAL
- THINK ABOUT YOUR BACKDROP, CHRISTMAS SETS ARE IN THE MAIN DARKER TONES YOU’LL WANT TO STAND OUT FROM

Have a practice run
When my parents visited Taipei, we took the opportunity to capture some generational portraits with Anne Marie’s Photography the beautiful image on this page of my family & I is posted with her permission & with thanks.
To build our outfits I knew our location would be lots of greens so I wanted to bring some of that in whilst adding lighter & darker colours for some contrast to help us stand out. We went for a palette similar to the 4th one above; Creams, Navy, Greens & a pop in the tonal rusty pinky colour of my dress. Nobody matches but everyone coordinates – jackpot!
I’m a very visual person, I went through the kids wardrobes & laid out what we already had that I knew was comfortable and fitted the colour choices. I then ordered missing items and put them all on the bed together again. 11 was originally going to have a green tee but it was too much when I put it together and this polo is his favourite. 17 lives in combats, would I have preferred chinos? Absolutely. Was it a hill I was prepared to die on? Absolutely not.
A side note – the week before photo day is not the time to try a fresh haircut, two weeks after this 13 cut his ponytail of 3 years but still isn’t quite used to the new style, having a longer term cut in photos is the best option.
Some what to wear examples for christmas photos
I LOVE Next in the UK. My kids are tall and slim, Next clothes fit well and come in loads of sizes & fits with those handy waist elastic thingies. I was made up to find out if you order from next.tw you can get all of my UK favourites delivered in around a week. I don’t love shipping things miles and miles but #tallgirlproblems
I have some favourite options linked to the products in my Instagram highlights @bohobabyinternational so you can shop my selections for your self. This is in no way affiliated with NEXT.
Christmas jammies are an adorable option for kids at their christmas photos. You can blow all of the rules and go for a family set of wild christmas jumpers – why not put them on top of your ultra coordinated outfit?
Ladies pair a cosy light jumper or blouse in gorgeous fabric with tailored shorts or skinny jeans. Gents a collared tee or an oxford shirt with chinos looks great anywhere. Golden rule: one pattern or pop.
SO GRATEFUL
I have had annual Christmas sessions with Cass for years now – my family always wait to see what we have come up with this year for our card! Its so much fun, we all look forward to it.
